The Complete Visitor's Guide to the Giza Pyramids
Visiting the Giza Pyramids: Everything You Need to Know
The Giza Pyramids are the most recognisable monuments on Earth and the last surviving wonder of the ancient world. Here is your comprehensive guide to making the most of your visit.
The Three Pyramids
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the oldest and largest, standing 138 metres tall. Originally 146 metres β the tallest human-built structure for nearly 3,800 years. Over 2.3 million limestone and granite blocks were used in its construction.
The Pyramid of Khafre appears taller due to being built on higher ground, but is actually slightly shorter. It retains some original smooth outer casing limestone near the apex.
The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three. Its lower portion is finished in distinctive red granite.
The Great Sphinx
Standing 73 metres long and 20 metres tall, the Great Sphinx is the world's largest monumental sculpture. Carved from a single mass of bedrock limestone, it depicts a human-headed lion widely believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.
