Siwa Oasis: Egypt's Remote Desert Paradise
Siwa: The Oasis at the Edge of the World
Eight hours west of Cairo across the Sahara lies one of Egypt's most magical destinations: Siwa Oasis. A lush patch of palms, olive trees and freshwater springs in the middle of the vast Western Desert, Siwa has its own unique Berber culture and language, and a remote beauty that feels a world away from the Nile Valley.
The Oracle of Amun
The Temple of Amun (Temple of the Oracle) at Aghurmi is where, in 331 BC, Alexander the Great made a remarkable detour to seek confirmation of his divine status. The oracle reportedly confirmed it – a pivotal moment in Alexander's self-mythology.
Natural Wonders of Siwa
Cleopatra's Bath is a natural freshwater spring pool that has been inviting weary travellers for thousands of years. Legend holds that the Queen of the Nile herself once bathed here.
The Great Sand Sea covers over 72,000 square kilometres. The dunes – some reaching 140 metres – offer thrilling 4x4 adventures and sandboarding. Sunset from the top of a great dune is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Getting to Siwa
The only practical way is by private car or bus from Cairo (approximately 8 hours). Our 2-Day Siwa Oasis Safari handles all transport and includes accommodation, meals, and guided tours of all key sites.
